It’s official – kinda! With news of the 2018 Jeep Grand Wagoneer possibly on the drawing board. There is growing confidence amongst Wagoneer-lovers that the seemingly lost Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) nameplate is finally making a comeback. Not since 1991 has the world seen a new Wagoneer, popularly called the “Woody”. So with news of a possible Jeep Grand Wagoneer to be unveiled in the next year or two.
2018 Jeep Grand Wagoneer – Executive Overview
So what should we expect when the 2018 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is finally launched? To get a hint of that, we need to see what top company executives are thinking. On the 19th of May last year (2015), FCA Chief Executive (CEO) Sergio Marchionne hinted to a group of reporters of his vision for a new Grand Wagoneer.
So what does that mean for the 2018 Jeep Grand Wagoneer? Well, in all likelihood that translates to a uni-body design; a deviation from the truck-based, body-on-frame design that we see used for the Cadillac Escalade and Chevrolet Suburban.
And given these executive musings, it is also highly probable that the Jeep Grand Wagoneer line-up will share similar powertrains as those seen in the Cherokee. Meaning, 8-speed auto transmissions, rear wheel drive that is coupled with beefed-up V6 and V8 (Hemi) engines, as well as the possibility of a diesel alternative. The company is rumored to be working to ramp up the performance and fuel efficiency of both engine variants.
2018 Jeep Grand Wagoneer – Style and Design Musings
Obviously, nothing much has been said publically about the exterior design of the 2018 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. However, industry analysts are willing to bet big money that the new concept will be the result of bringing the ‘70s-era Jeep Cherokee into the 20th century.
Unlike today’s 2-row Grand Cherokee, the new Grand Wagoneer will definitely (based on earlier speculations by company CEO) be a 3-row affair – a first of its kind for the company since the Commander. This is thought to be FCA’s answer to the challenge that shoppers and mid-sized families have made known to the company.
The 2018 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is also expected to arrive with more comfortable seating, a more efficient re-designed dashboard. New and enhanced safety and in-vehicle entertainment systems.
2018 Jeep Grand Wagoneer – Timing Thoughts
The re-launch of the Jeep Grand Wagoneer is part of the company’s 5-year forward-looking strategy. It marks the first time in over 25 years that the Wagoneer nameplate will be granted a vehicle class of its own. Sure, the Grand Cherokee line-up did carry some of the trim levels of the older Wagoneer – but that was the extent of it. 2018 is expected to show that, with the re-launched Wagoneer. Jeep is serious about making a long-term play in all aspects of the SUV market.
So when will FCA actually release the Jeep Grand Wagoneer 2018? Well, since this is right now a concept SUV, it’s too early to say exactly when it might be coming to a dealership near you. However, mid-2018 is where the smart money is in terms of thoughts of an availability date.
